I review my belongs regularly to assess the need for a purge.
It’s something I like to do when I wake up on the weekend because I find it relaxing – almost a meditative kind of thing where I’m in the moment. It amazes me that even though I am an organizer and I’m aware of minimalism and keeping things to a minimum, I’m still compelled to keep more than I need.
It’s practical stuff – for example, attractive glass bottles and jars I could possibly repurpose (and do!). But there’s a point where they need to go into the recycling bin. A common concern I hear from clients is that they’re fearful of getting rid of something they may need in the future or they’re ashamed that they spent money on it, only to get rid of it in the end (I wrote about making thoughtful purchases a while back).
The truth in life is that getting organized is not a one-time thing.
It’s a constant cycle, like cleaning the house or doing laundry. Things accumulate, they get dirty, dishes and clothes need washing. Spending a little time tending to your home on a regular basis and looking at it as an act of love can ease some of your stress. One or two smaller loads of laundry is easier to handle than letting it pile up and competing with your neighbors for an open machine because you now have five loads to do.
